The Allegheny Advantage

Athletes of the Year
Mia Symoniak
Women's Cross Country
Mia Symoniak was selected by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the Allegheny Female Student-Athlete of the Year. An All-NCAC performer in Cross Country and both Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, she was chosen over five other nominees for the award.

Symoniak had a decorated year as the Allegheny women's top distance runner. During the cross country season, she placed ninth among 91 runners at the NCAC Championships to earn All-NCAC Second Team status. Symoniak finished 25th of 311 finishers at the Mideast Region Regional, claiming All-Region status.

Other in-season accolades included one stint as NCAC Runner of the Week after Symoniak took fifth out of 193 participants at Calvin's Knight Invitational. She was also honored as an Allegheny Athlete of the Week once and was the SAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Month in January.

During the indoor track campaign, Symoniak won the 5,000-meter run at the NCAC Championships while setting a new Allegheny and conference record (17:19.82). She also won the 5,000 individual race at the NCAC Relays and was first in the 3,000 at Mount Union's Jim Wuske Invitational. In her trip to Nationals, Symoniak finished 12th in the 5K.

During the outdoor season, Symoniak established her dominance in the 5,000 with another NCAC title. She also garnered NCAC Distance Runner of the Week honors after placing third in the 10,000 at Bucknell's Bison Classic. Symoniak was also an Allegheny Athlete of the Week.
Chris Marker
Men's Cross Country
Chris Marker was selected by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the Allegheny Male Student-Athlete of the Year. An All-American performer in Cross Country, he was chosen over three other nominees for the award.

Marker, a junior, began his 2009-10 school year in fine fashion, claiming placing second at the NCAC Cross Country Championships, first at the Mideast Regional and 14th at the Division III Championships.

He was named to the All-NCAC First Team for finishing as runner-up among 109 finishers at the conference meet. At Regionals, he became Allegheny's first-ever individual region champion, placing ahead of 313 other runners, while the team won its first Mideast Region crown. At Nationals, the Gators took third place.

Marker was strong throughout the cross country season, placing first among 245 runners at Oberlin's Inter-Regional Rumble and second of 200 at Calvin's Knight Invitational. He was twice named Allegheny Athlete of the Week and once was an NCAC Runner of the Week after his performance at Calvin. The SAAC honored him twice as its Male Student-Athlete of the Month in September and October.

For the second consecutive year, Marker won the 5,000-meter run at both the NCAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field championship events. He set a new Gator record in the 5K when recording a time of 14:24.08 at Hillsdale's Gina Relays.

After winning the 5,000 at Washington and Lee's Carnival, he was honored as the NCAC Distance Runner of the Week. In April, the SAAC recognized him with his third Male Student-Athlete of the Month award.

Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Grace Moore and Caroline Hourihan each had a double-double, while Katie Landy scored a game-high 22 points to lead Fredonia State over Allegheny 68-60 in non-conference women’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon.

Moore and Hourihan each pulled down 10 boards to help the Blue Devils (4-2) hold a 59-27 rebounding advantage and post their fourth win of the season. Moore scored 12 points and Hourihan added 10 points and six assists.

Jill Gregory led the Gators (4-5) in scoring for the seventh time in nine games, posting 17 points. Heidi Goeller and Brittany Bell each chipped in 10 points.

The Gators (4-5) forced Fredonia to turn the ball over 30 times to gather 17 steals, but it was the Blue Devil’s 12-2 run late in the second half to counteract Allegheny’s comeback attempt.

Fredonia never trailed in the first half and had an eight-point lead at intermission, 33-25. The Gators came out of the break with a 11-0 run to take their first lead at 36-33. Lauren Donahoe started with a jumper and Goeller tallied a layup, before Gregory scored the next seven straight points for the three-point lead at the 17:25 mark. The Blue Devils committed six turnovers during that stretch.

A three-pointer by Liz Wierbinski put the hosts up by one, but Gregory made another basket to regain the lead momentarily. Bell knocked down one of three triples on the afternoon and Greta Pszenny knocked down two from the free-throw line for a 49-44 lead with 11:36 remaining.

With a 51-48 lead by the Gators, Fredonia used two three-pointers and five points by Moore to take the lead for good at the 6:22 mark, 60-53. Allegheny immediately cut the lead to two points with a Bell three and Gregory layup. Moore came up big again in the final minute with four more points to keep the Blue Devils out in front.

In the first half, Fredonia managed to get out to a 23-14 lead after a Landy layup. Behind Pszenny’s four points and Ann Ryan’s first collegiate three-pointer got the Gators within two at 25-23. That would be the last time Allegheny scored in the half and the Blue Devils’ 8-0 closed out the stanza.

The Gators will take a two-week hiatus before returning on December 28 against Tufts at the Land of Magic Classic in Orlando, Florida. Game time is 2 p.m.
