BoxscoreWASHINGTON, Pa. - The Allegheny women's lacrosse team held a 12-7 scoring advantage in the second half, netting three straight goals to start the opening stanza to take the lead for good en route to a 21-17 win over Washinton & Jefferson in non-conference action on Wednesday night.
Megan Grossman led the high-charged attack with five goals and two assists for a team-high seven points, helping the Gators (3-4) to collect their third win of the season. Christina Zanic and Abby Silvester each tallied four goals in the victory. Jensen Paterson went two-for-two in goals and assists, while winning a game-high 10 draw controls.
For the Presidents, Brittney Oake tallied six of Washington & Jefferson's 17 goals on the evening.
Allegheny came out on top in the scoring frenzy contest, but it was Courtney Schrock who gave the Presidents the early 2-0 lead in the first 2:07 of game. Laura Perry fed Schrock to put W&J
ahead in the opening 35 seconds, before she struck again for a two-goal cushion.
The Gators scored the next seven out of eight goals to take a 7-3 lead in the 13th minute. Kiah Voyer-Colbath started the run and Grossman followed with two consecutive goals for a 3-2 lead. Liz Turcik interrupted with a goal at the 20:19 mark. Zanic answered with two unassisted tallies, while Cailtin Fearon and Abby Silvester scored for a four-goal advantage.
W&J returned the favor with a five-goal stretch to regain the lead at 9-8. Grossman earned her hat trick in the first 20 minutes with her third goal at the 5:58 mark. Oake got the last say of the half with her fourth tally to give the Presidents the edge heading into the second half.
Allegheny came out of the break with a vengeance and thanks to Silvester's hat trick over a eight-minute span, the Gators took a 13-10 lead and never looked back.
W&J got within one goal at 17:40 on back-to-back goals. Another four-goal run by the Gators gave them a five-goal cushion to prove the difference in the contest.
Rachael Coons started in goal for Allegheny, recording seven stops in 45 minutes of work before making way for Becca O'Shurak, who collected two saves.
The Gators return to action on Saturday at home against Oberlin. Game time is 1 p.m.
