MEADVILLE, Pa. – For the third straight game, the Allegheny women’s basketball team held their opponent under 30 percent shooting to collect its fourth North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win with a 70-49 decision over Oberlin on Wednesday night.
Jill Gregory poured in a game-high 20 points, while Emilie Simone and Brittany Bell each chipped in 10 points to help the Gators (7-10, 4-4 NCAC) improve to 3-1 in conference play at home.
Freshman Allison Anderson led the Yeowomen (3-15, 2-7 NCAC) with 15 points and a game-high seven steals. Kelly Warlich was also in double figures with 13 points.
After trailing for the first half of the opening stanza, Allegheny used a 15-3 run over a five-minute span to take the lead for good. Shannon Culbreath started the comeback with a layup, steal and a jumper all in the paint.
Laura Magnelli put the Gators ahead 12-11 with a three-pointer, but Ellen Neumann hit the front end of two free throws to knot the game at 12-all. Gregory then sandwiched Britni Mohney’s basket with a jumper and a trey to make it 19-12.
Bell helped give Allegheny an 11-point lead with back-to-back buckets, the first a jumper and then a three-pointer for a 30-19 lead with 2:59 left in the half.
The Gators did not let up in the second half and kept their double-digit lead built in the first half. Gregory scored the first six out of 10 points for a 46-28 Allegheny advantage. Oberlin got within 10 points, but the Gators responded with a 9-0 run to push the lead to 60-41 after a Heidi Goeller layup.
Allegheny took its largest lead at 67-47 with 1:59 remaining in the game off a Mohney triple.
The Gators were dominant on the boards, pulling down 54 to the Yeowomen’s 35. Culbreath played a big part in the rebounds, grabbing a team high of 10 and adding six points. Simone recorded eight rebounds to give her exactly 500 for her career.
In the first half, the lead changed six times including the last time in Allegheny’s favor with 2:39 left. layup and back-to-back triples by and pushed the lead to 31-24.
The Gators return to action on Saturday at Kenyon. Game time is 3 p.m.
