Beth Muller fell one win short of her second straight sprint trifecta, but still won the 55- and 200-yard dashes, to lead the Allegheny women's indoor track and field team to third place out of eight teams at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships at Denison. She was named Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year for the second straight season.

Box Score

OBERLIN, Ohio – Brittany Bell scored 10 of her career-high 24 points in overtime to lead Allegheny over Oberlin 80-69 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) women’s basketball action on Tuesday night.

Bell matched a career high with six three-pointers, going 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in overtime to help the Gators (5-7, 2-1 NCAC) outscore the Yeowomen (2-10, 1-2 NCAC)17-6 in the extra period to collect their first win in the new year.

Three other players were in double figures for Allegheny. Jill Gregory recorded 17 points, seven rebounds and tied a career high with five steals. Emilie Simone added 13 points, seven rebounds and came up with a career high seven blocks. Laura Magnelli was the fourth Gator in double digits with 10 points.

Allison Anderson led Oberlin with 23 points, seven assists and five steals. Kelly Warlich contributed a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards.

Bell drained her fifth triple of the game to give the Gators the lead for good at 68-66 with 4:17 left in overtime. Gregory followed with two free throws and a steal to set up Bell’s final three-pointer for a seven-point lead.

The Yeowomen’s Kayla Brandt made a jumper at the 1:37 mark and a free throw with 37 seconds left, but those would be the final points for Oberlin. Simone got her layup to drop and Bell sandwiched two sets of free throws between a Magnelli free throw to seal the victory.

The way the first half played out, there may have been a whisper of the word overtime. Four lead changes and the score being ties seven times best describes the opening 20 minutes.

The hosts led the final nine minutes of the game until there were 20 ticks left in the first half. Gregory dished out the ball to Bell for a three-pointer to put the Gators ahead 30-27. Ellen Neumann got the last bucket of half for a one-point Allegheny lead.

It didn’t take long for Oberlin to regain the lead in the first 25 seconds of the second half. Anderson and Warlich each made a triple for a 35-32 advantage. Neither team held a lead larger than five points with the Gators to be the last to take with six minutes remaining.

With 10 seconds left, Neumann knotted the game at 61-all with a good jumper. Gregory was sent to the line on the next possession for two free throws to give the Yeowomen six seconds at a last chance. Anderson made a jumper with one second left to force the overtime.

Shannon Culbreath came up big on the glass for Allegheny, pulling down a season-high 13 boards. As a team, the Gators posted a 55-39 edge in rebounds.

The Gators return to action on Friday at Earlham. Game time is 6 p.m.
