MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women’s swimming and diving team posted its fourth straight dual meet victory by winning nine events to defeat Hiram 133-89 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action on Saturday.
Competing for the first time in over a month, the Gators (5-3, 2-0 NCAC) are starting off the New Year right with their second conference victory. Ashley Whitehead, Megan Knox and Christine Smith recorded two individual victories each.
After the first relay of the day, Allegheny swept the next two individual races. Smith won the 1000 free in 11:17.17 and Lauren Karl was a close second with 11:17.50, while Gaby Zinobile placed third in 11:58.15.
Knox then led a 1, 2, 3 finish in the 200 free, touching first in 1:59.32. Molly Durot posted a time of 2:07.29 for second and Tara Stein was third with 2:10.13. In the 50 free, Whitehead got her first win with a time of 25.37 and Hannah Janvrin was the other Gator who placed, taking third (27.91).
The 400 IM was the third event Allegheny took the top three spots led by Smith. She clocked in at 5:03.09 but not too far ahead of Rachelle Barrett who came in second with 5:03.19. Zinobile got her second third-place in this event in 5:10.40.
The Gators won the final five swimming events, starting with Alycia Conway in the 200 butterfly (2:19.40). Whitehead picked up her second first-place in the 100 free (55.79) and Karl tallied her first win in the 200 backstroke (2:23.40).
Knox touched in 5:24.70 to win the 500 free and Barrett posted a time of 2:37.84 for first in the 200 breaststroke.
Both diving events belonged to Allegheny thanks to Jaclyn Skirkanich and Shelby Penn. Skirkanich scored a 190.65 on the one-meter board to win this event, while Penn tallied a 182.35 for second with a 45 point edge over the Terriers competitor. Penn switched with Skirkanich in the three-meter portion, earning a 176.45 for first.
The Gators returns to action on Friday at Carnegie Mellon. Meet time is 6 p.m.
