MEADVILLE, Pa. -- For the second consecutive game, Henry Heeter set a new career-high for points in a game -- this time with 22 -- and led the Allegheny men's basketball team over Oberlin, 70-54, in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.
Heeter shot 8 of 15 from the field, including a 4 of 8 slate from three-point land, and recorded four steals for a Gator squad which has won six of its last seven contests. Donte Briscoe added 13 points, five rebounds and four steals while leading rebounder George Raftis grabbed seven boards.
Allegheny (12-9, 9-4) weathered an early storm when the Yeomen scored the game's first six points. Andrew Fox put in two layups and Johnathan Nelson hit two free throws before the Blue and Gold stormed back with a 12-2 run of their own.
Heeter and Briscoe scored five points apiece and Raftis had two, propelling the Gators to a 12-8 lead. Later in the half, Seth Eisner snapped an 18-all tie by knocking down a trey with 7:15 remaining in the first. Allegheny maintained its lead until the final buzzer. Heeter had 13 of his points in the opening period and Briscoe contributed 11, helping the visitors take a 36-28 advantage into halftime.
Craig Devinney put Allegheny up 38-28 with a layup to open the second half before Oberlin answered with a seven-point run. Fox made a layup, James Tompsett buried a three and Dahsan Gary scored a layup to cut the Gators' lead to 38-35.
Heeter made a momentum-shifting three-pointer at the opposite end, triggering six consecutive points for the visitors who held a 44-35 lead with 15:37 on the clock. Ahead 48-41, Allegheny went on yet another run: Heeter made a basket, Eisner nailed a three and then a dunk by Briscoe gave the Blue and Gold a 55-41 advantage with 7:30 remaining.
Both teams shot well from the floor with Oberlin (6-16, 2-11) having the advantage. The Yeomen were 22 of 49 from the field (44.9 percent) while the Gators went 24 of 54 (44.4 percent). Allegheny outrebounded its hosts, 34-26.
The Gators will make a quick turnaround for their next game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. They will host Penn State New Kensington to make up a game which was originally scheduled for Monday.
