CANTON, Ohio – Freshman Brandon Intrieri and Josh Sesek each swam NCAA “B” cut qualifying times to help the Allegheny men’s swimming and diving team sit sixth after the second day of the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championships on Friday.

The Denison Big Red continues to stay out front with a team score of 1,223, while Kenyon remains on their heels in second placed with a score of 1017. The race for third place is tight with only 32 points separating four teams. Wittenberg is in third with 566 points and Wabash is fourth with a score of 547. Ten points separates Wooster and Allegheny for fifth and sixth, respectively.

After the first three events, the Gators saw themselves in third place with a team score of 360 and win one event remaining there was only 39 points separating four teams in third through seventh place. The gap got even smaller at the end of the day with 32 points between the middle four teams, leaving question marks of the final day of competition.

For the men, Intrieri collected his second “B” cut time on the weekend, coming in fourth in the 100 butterfly in 50.72. Two seconds behind was Mirno Pasquali with a time of 52.24 to place 15th overall. Pasquali recorded the same finish in the 100 backstroke in 53.79.

Sesek, who hit a “B” cut qualifying time in the preliminaries of the 100 breaststroke, did it again in the finals with a time of 58.40 to finish in eighth place.

A seventh-place finish went to the 200 medley relay team of Kyle Lincoln, Josh Sesek, Christian Steinwarz and Andrew Bean. The squad moved up one place from eighth in the preliminaries to seventh in the finals with a time of 1:38.13.

Steinwarz and Tyler Torbert stayed in the same spots after the preliminaries in the 400 IM, keeping 10th and 11th places, respectively. Steinwarz knocked off three seconds from earlier in the day to finish with a time of 4:15.12 and Torbet did the same to clock in 4:15.57.

The 800 free relay team of Matt Gauthier, Pasquali, Steinwarz and Intrieri managed to shave six seconds off their seeded time to swim 7:01.04 for fourth place.

Allegheny returns to action tomorrow for the final day of competition. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.
