MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College football coaching staff has announced the annual end-of-year awards, recognizing 12 student-athletes for the 2009 season at the football banquet held on Sunday, February 21, 2010.
Senior inside linebacker Andy Schleihauf was honored with the George Coon and Student-Athlete of the Year awards. The George Coon award is presented to a football player in the senior class whose desire to participate and dedication to team success has earned him the highest respect of his fellow teammates. The Student-Athlete of the Year award is the best combination of grade-point average and athletics.
The Allegheny Advantage Player of the Year honor is given to a student-athlete for their preparation, confidence and character. This year the award went to senior wide receiver Mark Sutton. Senior Nick Silva and junior Jermaine Mitchell shared the Clair Jackson Outstanding Linemen of the Year award, while kicker Ryan Zipf and punter Andrew Dejong earned the Special Teams award.
The Offensive Scout award went to junior wide receiver Jim Traynor. The Defensive Scout Award was presented to freshmen John Douglas and Bill Devlin. The F. Dawson Weber Defensive and Offensive Back of the Year went to junior strong safety Sid Facaros and junior quarterback T.J. Salopek, respectively.
The final award, the Block A or known as the Most Valuable Player, was received by senior wide receiver Jake Vite.
