GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Allegheny's Tony Dipre set a meet record and posted an NCAA automatic-qualifying time while winning the mile at the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. He was also a member of the winning Distance Medley Relay team for the Gators, who placed third among nine teams at Denison.
Dipre, who was named the Distance Runner of the Year, claimed his individual win with a time of 4:10.84 and held off Denison's Makorobondo Salukombo (4:12.23). Allegheny runners dominated the event, taking four of the top six places. Ryan Hanson was fourth (4:16.27), Ben Eyer took fifth (4:18.43) and Mike Vlah placed sixth (4:21.68). The previous meet record was set in 2009 by the Gators' Jeramie Parker (4:13.89). The Blue and Gold has now won three straight indoor miles at NCACs.
Vlah, Alex Gorski and Chris Marker joined Dipre on the DMR squad, which clocked in at 10:35.79. Ohio Wesleyan finished second in 10:40.24.
Competing in the 800 final, Andrew Mahone and Matt Brush finished second and seventh, respectively. Mahone, who crossed the line in 1:55.33, was defeated by Wabash's Jake Waterman (1:54.12). Brush recorded a time of 1:57.85.
Donte Briscoe added a third-place finish for Allegheny. He was third in the high jump.
The Gators' six-year streak of winning the indoor 3,000 came to an end with Salukombo taking the gold (8:41.86). Gator runners Patrick McLaughlin and Ryan Sullivan earned points in the race. McLaughlin was sixth (8:52.05) while Sullivan grabbed (8:55.86).
After qualifying for the 55 hurdles on Friday, Tim Hassett finished ninth on Saturday (8.40 seconds).
With 165 points, Ohio Wesleyan claimed the meet championship -- its third straight in NCAC Indoor competition -- Wabash was second with 141. The Gators had 83 points and were followed by Oberlin (79), Wittenberg (66.5), Denison (44), Earlham (32), Wooster (30) and Kenyon (21.5).
