The Allegheny Advantage

Athletes of the Year
Chris Marker
Men's Cross Country
Chris Marker was selected by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the Allegheny Male Student-Athlete of the Year. An All-American performer in Cross Country, he was chosen over three other nominees for the award.

Marker, a junior, began his 2009-10 school year in fine fashion, claiming placing second at the NCAC Cross Country Championships, first at the Mideast Regional and 14th at the Division III Championships.

He was named to the All-NCAC First Team for finishing as runner-up among 109 finishers at the conference meet. At Regionals, he became Allegheny's first-ever individual region champion, placing ahead of 313 other runners, while the team won its first Mideast Region crown. At Nationals, the Gators took third place.

Marker was strong throughout the cross country season, placing first among 245 runners at Oberlin's Inter-Regional Rumble and second of 200 at Calvin's Knight Invitational. He was twice named Allegheny Athlete of the Week and once was an NCAC Runner of the Week after his performance at Calvin. The SAAC honored him twice as its Male Student-Athlete of the Month in September and October.

For the second consecutive year, Marker won the 5,000-meter run at both the NCAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field championship events. He set a new Gator record in the 5K when recording a time of 14:24.08 at Hillsdale's Gina Relays.

After winning the 5,000 at Washington and Lee's Carnival, he was honored as the NCAC Distance Runner of the Week. In April, the SAAC recognized him with his third Male Student-Athlete of the Month award.
Mia Symoniak
Women's Cross Country
Mia Symoniak was selected by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the Allegheny Female Student-Athlete of the Year. An All-NCAC performer in Cross Country and both Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, she was chosen over five other nominees for the award.

Symoniak had a decorated year as the Allegheny women's top distance runner. During the cross country season, she placed ninth among 91 runners at the NCAC Championships to earn All-NCAC Second Team status. Symoniak finished 25th of 311 finishers at the Mideast Region Regional, claiming All-Region status.

Other in-season accolades included one stint as NCAC Runner of the Week after Symoniak took fifth out of 193 participants at Calvin's Knight Invitational. She was also honored as an Allegheny Athlete of the Week once and was the SAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Month in January.

During the indoor track campaign, Symoniak won the 5,000-meter run at the NCAC Championships while setting a new Allegheny and conference record (17:19.82). She also won the 5,000 individual race at the NCAC Relays and was first in the 3,000 at Mount Union's Jim Wuske Invitational. In her trip to Nationals, Symoniak finished 12th in the 5K.

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Beth Muller fell one win short of her second straight sprint trifecta, but still won the 55- and 200-yard dashes, to lead the Allegheny women's indoor track and field team to third place out of eight teams at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships at Denison.

Muller and teammate Lauren Butler racked up a pair of meet awards for the Gators. Muller was named Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year for the second straight season. Butler earned Field Athlete of the Year honors.

Muller repeated as the 55 champ with a time of 7.51 seconds. Whitney Goller of Wittenberg edged Allegheny's Rebecca Lendyak for second place. Both Goller and Lendyak recorded official times of 7.65, but upon further breakdown, Goller's clock-in of 7.646 barely edged Lendyak's 7.647.

Muller then successfully defended her title in the 200. She won the event in :26.37, holding off Ohio Wesleyan's Lainey Kekic (:26.66) and Kenyon's Alexia Derkasch (:26.77) in second and third, respectively. Lendyak placed fifth in :27.15.

As the defending champ in the 400, Muller was beat out by Marissa Clardy of Oberlin. Muller finished the race in 1:00.08 while Clardy came in at :59.39. Lendyak was fifth in 1:00.94.

The Gators' distance squad performed well on Saturday. Samantha Zink placed third in the mile (5:15.41) while Katie Stancik was sixth (5:20.54). Kelly Gallagher added seventh-place points in the 3,000 (10:55.26) and the Distance Medley Relay team of Hannah Serlin, Laura Heltman, Angie Dyer and Stancik took fourth (13:02.78).

Allegheny's long jump duo of Emily Norton and Holly Wilson also gave a strong showing. Norton edged Wilson for third place with a jump of 15 feet, 9 inches. Wilson stretched 15-8 3/4.

Rounding out the Gators' top performances, Emily Norton tied for eighth in the high jump (4-7) and Emily Norton took ninth in the 55 hurdles.

With 164.5 points, Ohio Wesleyan claimed the meet championship -- its fourth straight in NCAC Indoor competition -- and Oberlin was second with 150. Allegheny had 113.5 points and was followed by Wittenberg (75), Denison (51), Kenyon (43), Wooster (39) and Earlham (27).
