The Allegheny Advantage

Athletes of the Year
Mia Symoniak
Women's Cross Country
Mia Symoniak was selected by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the Allegheny Female Student-Athlete of the Year. An All-NCAC performer in Cross Country and both Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, she was chosen over five other nominees for the award.

Symoniak had a decorated year as the Allegheny women's top distance runner. During the cross country season, she placed ninth among 91 runners at the NCAC Championships to earn All-NCAC Second Team status. Symoniak finished 25th of 311 finishers at the Mideast Region Regional, claiming All-Region status.

Other in-season accolades included one stint as NCAC Runner of the Week after Symoniak took fifth out of 193 participants at Calvin's Knight Invitational. She was also honored as an Allegheny Athlete of the Week once and was the SAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Month in January.

During the indoor track campaign, Symoniak won the 5,000-meter run at the NCAC Championships while setting a new Allegheny and conference record (17:19.82). She also won the 5,000 individual race at the NCAC Relays and was first in the 3,000 at Mount Union's Jim Wuske Invitational. In her trip to Nationals, Symoniak finished 12th in the 5K.

During the outdoor season, Symoniak established her dominance in the 5,000 with another NCAC title. She also garnered NCAC Distance Runner of the Week honors after placing third in the 10,000 at Bucknell's Bison Classic. Symoniak was also an Allegheny Athlete of the Week.
Chris Marker
Men's Cross Country
Chris Marker was selected by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the Allegheny Male Student-Athlete of the Year. An All-American performer in Cross Country, he was chosen over three other nominees for the award.

Marker, a junior, began his 2009-10 school year in fine fashion, claiming placing second at the NCAC Cross Country Championships, first at the Mideast Regional and 14th at the Division III Championships.

He was named to the All-NCAC First Team for finishing as runner-up among 109 finishers at the conference meet. At Regionals, he became Allegheny's first-ever individual region champion, placing ahead of 313 other runners, while the team won its first Mideast Region crown. At Nationals, the Gators took third place.

Marker was strong throughout the cross country season, placing first among 245 runners at Oberlin's Inter-Regional Rumble and second of 200 at Calvin's Knight Invitational. He was twice named Allegheny Athlete of the Week and once was an NCAC Runner of the Week after his performance at Calvin. The SAAC honored him twice as its Male Student-Athlete of the Month in September and October.

For the second consecutive year, Marker won the 5,000-meter run at both the NCAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field championship events. He set a new Gator record in the 5K when recording a time of 14:24.08 at Hillsdale's Gina Relays.

After winning the 5,000 at Washington and Lee's Carnival, he was honored as the NCAC Distance Runner of the Week. In April, the SAAC recognized him with his third Male Student-Athlete of the Month award.

CROZET, Va. -- The Allegheny baseball team earned its first win of the 2010 season, claiming a 10-5 victory in the first half of Sunday's doubleheader split with Frostburg State. The Bobcats won the nightcap in extra innings, 4-3.

James Fago led a 14-hit Gator attack in the Blue and Gold win. He batted 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. After falling behind 4-1 in the third inning, Allegheny (1-2) strung together three straight three-run innings to take a commanding lead. Fago provided a three-run homer in the sixth.

Allegheny opened the scoring in the top of the third. Anthony Wilbur was hit by a pitch and Eric Hansen walked. The pair performed a double-steal, setting up Aaron Lynch who drove in Wilbur with a sacrifice fly.

Frostburg (7-3) answered back with four runs in its half of the third. Jeff Kroboth started the one-out rally with a single and then stole second. Matt Greene put the Bobcats on the board with a single to plate Kroboth.

After a single by Matt Ridenour, Joe Garrity gave Frostburg its only lead. He smacked a two-run double and then scored on an RBI double by Doug Anuszewski.

Matt Stahl began the Gators' charge back in the fourth. He singled and Andy Schleihauf followed with a double. Fago cut the deficit, plating Stahl with a single. After Zack Nichols was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Jeff Dassner earned an RBI walk to score Schleihauf. Fago scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Aaron Lynch, tying the game at 4-4.

Dassner had the clutch hit during Allegheny's fifth -- a two-run single. Once again, Stahl led off the frame by getting on base -- this time via a Frostburg error. Schleihauf followed with a single and then Fago laid down a sacrifice bunt which put runners on second and third. Nichols drove in Stahl with a single and then stole second, setting the stage for Dassner's knock.

In the sixth, Ben Lowmaster led off with a double and Stahl singled before Fago's blast put the Gators up, 10-4.

David Strawser earned the win for Allegheny. He worked six innings, recording five strikeouts and one walk. Strawser settled in nicely after allowing four runs in the third. He followed it up with three scoreless innings, culminating in a double-play flyout.

Frank Brank worked the final three innings. He had three strikeouts and two walks in his collegiate pitching debut.

Stahl, Lowmaster and Hansen joined Fago as multiple hitters. Lowmaster was 2-for-5 while Stahl and Hanson were 2-for-4.

Greene batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs for the Bobcats. Kroboth and Anuszewski went 2-for-4 and Garrity contributed a 2-for-5 game with two RBIs and a run.

While the first game went the complete nine innings, the second contest was slated for seven frames, but the teams played eight. Frostburg emerged victorious on Daniel Heatwole's walk-off RBI single.

Frostburg took a 2-0 lead when Greene hammered a two-run double in the third.

Allegheny came back with one run in the fourth on an RBI single by Fago. Lowmaster, who started on the mound, led off the inning with a double. On a double by Stahl, Lowmaster was thrown out at the plate. Stahl then scored on Fago's hit.

Kroboth extended Frostburg's lead to 3-1 in the fifth with a sacrifice bunt before the Gators tied the game with two runs in the sixth.

Allegheny loaded the bases with no outs: Lynch and Lowmaster singled and then Stahl was hit by a pitch. A double play groundout scored Lynch and Fago tied the game at 3-all, singling in Lowmaster.

In the extra inning, Kroboth led off Frostburg's eighth with a hit-by-pitch, moved to second on a Gator error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Heatwole's hit.

Lowmaster pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs. He had two strikeouts and three walks before Fago took over on the mound. Fago tossed 2 1/3 innings and suffered a loss. He allowed only Heatwole's hit. The winning run was unearned.

Lowmaster and Fago led the Allegheny offense. Lowmaster was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Fago batted 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Greg Beachy pitched the victory for Frostburg. He worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
