CROZET, Va. -- The Allegheny baseball team earned its first win of the 2010 season, claiming a 10-5 victory in the first half of Sunday's doubleheader split with Frostburg State. The Bobcats won the nightcap in extra innings, 4-3.
James Fago led a 14-hit Gator attack in the Blue and Gold win. He batted 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. After falling behind 4-1 in the third inning, Allegheny (1-2) strung together three straight three-run innings to take a commanding lead. Fago provided a three-run homer in the sixth.
Allegheny opened the scoring in the top of the third. Anthony Wilbur was hit by a pitch and Eric Hansen walked. The pair performed a double-steal, setting up Aaron Lynch who drove in Wilbur with a sacrifice fly.
Frostburg (7-3) answered back with four runs in its half of the third. Jeff Kroboth started the one-out rally with a single and then stole second. Matt Greene put the Bobcats on the board with a single to plate Kroboth.
After a single by Matt Ridenour, Joe Garrity gave Frostburg its only lead. He smacked a two-run double and then scored on an RBI double by Doug Anuszewski.
Matt Stahl began the Gators' charge back in the fourth. He singled and Andy Schleihauf followed with a double. Fago cut the deficit, plating Stahl with a single. After Zack Nichols was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Jeff Dassner earned an RBI walk to score Schleihauf. Fago scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Aaron Lynch, tying the game at 4-4.
Dassner had the clutch hit during Allegheny's fifth -- a two-run single. Once again, Stahl led off the frame by getting on base -- this time via a Frostburg error. Schleihauf followed with a single and then Fago laid down a sacrifice bunt which put runners on second and third. Nichols drove in Stahl with a single and then stole second, setting the stage for Dassner's knock.
In the sixth, Ben Lowmaster led off with a double and Stahl singled before Fago's blast put the Gators up, 10-4.
David Strawser earned the win for Allegheny. He worked six innings, recording five strikeouts and one walk. Strawser settled in nicely after allowing four runs in the third. He followed it up with three scoreless innings, culminating in a double-play flyout.
Frank Brank worked the final three innings. He had three strikeouts and two walks in his collegiate pitching debut.
Stahl, Lowmaster and Hansen joined Fago as multiple hitters. Lowmaster was 2-for-5 while Stahl and Hanson were 2-for-4.
Greene batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs for the Bobcats. Kroboth and Anuszewski went 2-for-4 and Garrity contributed a 2-for-5 game with two RBIs and a run.
While the first game went the complete nine innings, the second contest was slated for seven frames, but the teams played eight. Frostburg emerged victorious on Daniel Heatwole's walk-off RBI single.
Frostburg took a 2-0 lead when Greene hammered a two-run double in the third.
Allegheny came back with one run in the fourth on an RBI single by Fago. Lowmaster, who started on the mound, led off the inning with a double. On a double by Stahl, Lowmaster was thrown out at the plate. Stahl then scored on Fago's hit.
Kroboth extended Frostburg's lead to 3-1 in the fifth with a sacrifice bunt before the Gators tied the game with two runs in the sixth.
Allegheny loaded the bases with no outs: Lynch and Lowmaster singled and then Stahl was hit by a pitch. A double play groundout scored Lynch and Fago tied the game at 3-all, singling in Lowmaster.
In the extra inning, Kroboth led off Frostburg's eighth with a hit-by-pitch, moved to second on a Gator error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Heatwole's hit.
Lowmaster pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs. He had two strikeouts and three walks before Fago took over on the mound. Fago tossed 2 1/3 innings and suffered a loss. He allowed only Heatwole's hit. The winning run was unearned.
Lowmaster and Fago led the Allegheny offense. Lowmaster was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Fago batted 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Greg Beachy pitched the victory for Frostburg. He worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
