MEADVILLE, Pa. – Sara Doan went 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs to help the Allegheny softball team split a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader with Denison on Saturday afternoon.

The Gators (8-9, 1-1 NCAC) scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning behind three doubles to win the nightcap 4-2 and give the Big Red (15-11, 3-1 NCAC) their first conference loss.  Denison plated 15 runs on the same amount of hits, seven of which were extra-base hits to open up the day with a 15-9 victory.

Stephanie Fort and Katie Wills each tallied four hits on the day for Allegheny.

In game two, the Gators broke a 1-all tie with three runs on four hits in the fourth. Leading off, Doan singled and came in on a Fort double. Wills followed with the second double of the inning to score Fort. The final triple went to Breanna Appleby. With two outs, she drove the ball into left field to score Wills for a 4-1 lead.

Denison attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh, adding a run and loading the bases with two outs but Wills was able to get the final out on a grounder to second to earn the split.

It was a slugfest in game one with the Big Red scoring in all but two innings. Jessica Robertson had three hits on four at bats during the opener, while Kait Fiore had a double and a triple. Erica Evans managed to hit one over the fence for the lone run in the fifth inning.

Denison put up two runs to start and the Gators answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Doan singled to score Bodenlos, who reached on an error, before stealing home at 2-all. Fort reached on a fielder’s choice and was knocked in by Wills’ RBI single to take the one-run lead.

The Big Red kept their bats out and added four runs in the third thanks to Fiore’s double and then recorded five more in the fifth. Allegheny stayed within two runs after the fifth, using five hits to score four runs in the fourth to make it 11-9.

Nicole Rodi and Doan each singled to get runners on first and second. Fort steps up and triples to score the runners, before scoring on a wild pitch. Amanda Downey got on base with a single and Sophia Katz singled to score Downey for the four-run fourth inning.

With two down in the top of the sixth, Denison scored three more runs for the final 15-9 margin.

Downey gave up 12 hits and one earned run for the win in game two. Brittany Rung (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) was the hurler in game one, pitching seven innings and striking out one.

Allegheny returns to action tomorrow at Hiram. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
