GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Allegheny baseball team bounced back from a heartbreaking game-one loss and won game two to earn a split against Kenyon in a North Coast Athletic Conference East Division doubleheader on Saturday. The Lords rallied with a three-run seventh inning to claim a 5-4 decision before the Blue and Gold defeated the hosts, 9-2.
Allegheny (17-9, 7-3) opened the first game with a three-run first and then tacked on one run in the second.
Eric Hansen led off the day with a walk and moved to third on Ben Lowmaster's one-out single. Matt Stahl then plated Hansen on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Andy Schleihauf, Jeff Dassner and Matt Barclay strung together singles with Dassner and Barclay driving in runs.
Lowmaster drove in Allegheny's fourth run with a sacrifice fly. Anthony Wilbur led off the frame with a hit-by-pitch, stole second, moved to third on Aaron Lynch's single and scored on Lowmaster's out.
Kenyon (11-15, 6-8) trimmed its deficit to 4-2 in the third on RBI singles by Jesse Weiss and Tom Hardacker.
Allegheny starting pitcher David Strawser worked into the seventh inning with the two-run lead, but then ran into trouble. Danny Ricchetti began the comeback with a one-out double. The rest of the Lords' hits came with two outs.
Craig Wocl smacked an RBI single, pulling the hosts within 4-3. James Wendt walked. Matt Dishong then took over for Strawser and uncorked a costly wild pitch. Weiss then delivered a game-winning two-run single.
Strawser (3-2) was tough-luck losing pitcher. He officially went 6 2/3 innings, recording four strikeouts and two walks.
Kenyon's Dan White (2-5) went the distance. He had six strikeouts and two walks.
Dishong and the Gators rebounded with a strong performance in the nightcap. The Allegheny pitcher earned a complete-game victory while the Blue and Gold offense collected 15 hits.
Once again, the visitors took an early lead -- they scored twice in the first and four times in the second. Lynch and Lowmaster had back-to-back singles in the first, setting up an RBI double for Stahl and an RBI single by Schleihauf.
Barclay and Phil Morrissette started up the frame with singles and Barclay scored on a Lord error. Wilbur had an RBI groundout, Lowmaster hammered an RBI double and Stahl hit an RBI single, putting the Gators ahead 6-0.
Kenyon scored the game's next two runs -- one on a Weiss single in the third and another on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Allegheny added insurance runs in the later innings. After a single by Lynch, Lowmaster smashed an RBI triple. Lowmaster scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Schleihauf. Lynch contributed an RBI double in the seventh.
Lowmaster led the Gator offense with a 3-for-5 game with three runs, two RBIs, a triple and a double. Lynch also went 3-for-5, finishing with two runs. Stahl batted 3-for-3 and Schleihauf was 2-for-4.
Dishong (4-1) allowed two runs on eight hits in his start and also recorded four strikeouts and one walk.
Lord starter Tyler Dierke (6-1) lasted only two innings, allowing six runs on nine hits.
The teams will wrap up their regular season series on Sunday with a noon doubleheader.
