SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg softball team only need one run in the bottom of the sixth in game one and one run in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap to sweep Allegheny 1-0 and 3-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) softball action on Saturday.
Brooke Boswell threw a four-hit shutout and Brooklyn Cox scored the game-winning run after smacking a triple to get on base in opener, while Haley Gerken smacked the RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning to score pinch runner Liz Roby for the winning run in game two.
In a thrilling game one, the Tigers opened the only scoring in the bottom of the sixth. Cox, the lead-off hitter, cranked out a triple to center field and came home on a single by Jessica Snyder. That was all the hosts needed to take a 109 lead in the doubleheader.
The Gators (8-15, 1-3 NCAC) were close to tying the game in the seventh. Katie Wills singled to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Downey. Wills reached third on an error and made her way to home on the same play, but was called out to fall short of the comeback.
Rung suffered the loss on the mound, only allowing four hits and striking out six in six innings of work.
In game two, Allegheny took a 2-1 lead after two innings, but Wittenberg added a run in the fourth and in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
Maggie Bodenlos didn’t waste time hitting her season-high fourth home run on the first at bat of the game. Wittenberg tied it on its first chance at the plate. Boswell knocked in Cameron Catalfu with a double to left center to make it a 1-all game.
The Gators responded with another run in the second. Similar to game one, Wills walked and advanced to second with a sac bunt by Felicia Gowanlock. Sophie Katz drove her in with a single for a 2-1 lead.
Two innings later, the Tigers were able to tie the game for a second time and then completed the sweep with a walk-off single up the middle by Gerken in extra innings.
Bodenlos finished the game 2-for-3, while Downey allowed three runs on 12 hits and struck out four as the starting pitcher.
Allegheny returns to action tomorrow at Baldwin-Wallace. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
