Silvester Leads Allegheny Over Denison in Double Overtime

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Abby Silvester scored the game-winning goal 1:13 into double overtime to lead Allegheny over Denison 11-10 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

 

Silvester netted a game-high five goals, including the a goal with 38 seconds left in the game to force overtime and then making her last one count to help the Gators (6-7, 3-2 NCAC) collect their third conference victory and second straight. Becca O’Shurak made 11 saves in the cage for Allegheny.

 

Phoebe Myhrum and Alex Thurner each posted three points for the Big Red (7-6, 2-3 NCAC). Myhrum and two others scored two goals, while Thurner had one goal and two assists.

 

In a crucial conference contest, the decision for a winner came down to the final eight minutes of the game. Denison held a three-goal lead at 6-3 with 1:53 remaining in the first half. The Gators managed to cut that down to one goal with the help from Silvester and Kiah Voyer-Colbath in the final 1:25 before halftime.

 

Silvester finished a free-position shot with 1:25 left and Voyer-Colbath scored with 12 seconds on the clock for a 6-5 deficit at intermission. Voyer-Colbath tied the game with the first goal of the second half, making it 6-all.

 

Thurner answered with a free-position goal, but Meg Grossman returned the favor seven minutes later to tie the game once again.

 

The Big Red would tack on a goal and Allegheny would respond, including Silvester’s goal with 38 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

 

Emily Bergest struck first on an assist from Phoebe Myhrum for a 10-9 lead. Jensen Paterson waited to get her first goal of the game at the right time, scoring the equalizer with 28 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

 

To start the sudden victory overtime, Denison won the draw control and turned the ball over. Defender Noelle Brouillard picked up the ground ball and the Gators recorded the good clear, before Silvester scored the game winner at the 4:47 mark. That final shot gave Allegheny the 30-29 edge in shots.

 

 Paterson won a team-high four draw controls and Grossman caused five turnovers.

 

The Gators return to action on Friday at Oberlin. Game time is 5 p.m.
