GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Allegheny baseball team won a pair of games, 10-0 and 6-1, over Kenyon in a North Coast Athletic Conference East Division doubleheader on Sunday. With the victories, the Gators leave themselves on the brink of an NCAC Tournament berth.
Allegheny freshman pitcher Matthew Niedzwiecki (2-1) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout in the day's first contest. He recorded only one strikeout and benefited from the Gators' 13-hit attack.
Andy Schleihauf put Allegheny (19-9, 9-3) on the board in the second inning with a leadoff home run. In the third, Aaron Lynch singled, moved to second base on an error and then scored on Ben Lowmaster's RBI single, leaving the Gators with an early 2-0 lead.
The Blue and Gold broke the game open in the fifth with five runs. They had five hits during the inning, but only one left the infield.
Eric Hansen led off the frame with an infield hit, but was caught stealing. Lynch then singled, Lowmaster reached on an error and Matt Stahl singled, setting up RBI singles by Schleihauf, Jeff Dassner and Phil Morrissette; only Morrissette's hit left the infield. Matt Barclay added an RBI fielder's choice during the rally.
The Gators tacked on three more runs in the seventh. Schleihauf and Dassner reached base with singles. Barclay came through with a two-run single and Mick Betler ripped an RBI single of his own.
Schleihauf finished with a 3-for-4 game, including three runs and two RBIs. Lynch went 2-for-5 with two runs and Dassner batted 2-for-3.
Mike Kalis (2-4) suffered the loss for Kenyon (11-17, 6-10). He worked five innings, allowing seven runs -- only three earned -- on nine hits. He had two strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, the Gators scored four runs in the first and led the rest of the way. Hansen and Lowmaster set the stage with singles. Stahl hit an RBI double, Schleihauf came through with an RBI single, Dassner drove in a run while reaching on an error and Allegheny successfully executed a double-steal with Betler taking second base and Schleihauf scoring on the play to take a 4-0 advantage.
The Lords came back with a run in their half of the first when Tom Hardacker smashed an RBI single.
Allegheny added its last two runs in the second and third frames. Hansen singled and scored on an error in the second. Anthony Wilbur reached on a fielder's choice and drove in a run during the third.
Hansen was 2-for-3 with two runs during the game. Stahl and Schleihauf batted 2-for-4. One of Stahl's hits was a double.
Justin Abbott (3-3) started on the hill for Allegheny, allowing one run on seven hits in six innings of work. He struck out three batters before James Fago pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.
Andy Hoffman (1-1) went the distance for Kenyon, allowing only four earned runs in nine hits. He added three strikeouts.
The Gators will be in action next when they visit Penn State Behrend on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
