BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin-Wallace softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Allegheny, winning game one 7-2 and then posting a 12-0 five-inning victory in the nightcap on Sunday afternoon at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds field.
Felicia Gowanlock went 2-for-3 in game one, where the Gators (8-17) took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to score twice in the third inning and take a 2-0 lead. Darian Ouzts walked to start off the third and made it to second on a sacrifice bunt by Breanna Appleby.
Maggie Bodenlos reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second, before Ouzts scored on an error by the second baseman. Bodenlos also scored on play for a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets (16-13) answered with four runs in the fourth on four doubles and a sacrifice fly. Tanya Davis led off with her school-record 41st career double then scored on a two-bagger by Megan Coyne.
Baldwin-Wallace added three more in the fifth when Coyne blasted a three-run homer to plate Davis and Kobak for the final margin. Sarah Baker allowed one earned run in six innings for the win in opener.
In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets scored 12 runs on 14 hits across five innings. B-W scored first in the bottom of the opening frame and plated three more with RBI singles by Kobak and Davis. The lead grew by 11 with seven runs in the third inning.
On the mound, Baker started and pitched three innings to improve to 14-7. She allowed only one hit and struck out one without walking a batter. Amanda Downey recorded the loss in game two for Allegheny, striking out and walking three batters in 2 2/3 innings. She also joined Katz with recording the lone hits in the nightcap.
Brittany Rung pitched five innings and struck out four in game one on the hill.
The Gators return to action on Tuesday against Oberlin. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
