GREENVILLE, Pa. -- With two outs in the ninth inning, the Allegheny baseball team rallied for three runs and a 6-5 victory over Thiel in non-conference action on Saturday. Zack Nichols smacked an RBI single to score James Fago with the winning run. Fago had tied the game with a two-run single earlier in the frame.

The Gators (24-10) took the game's first lead, pushing across one run in their half of the third. Eric Hansen doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Matt Stahl's sacrifice fly.

Justin Scarpitti then helped the Tomcats (12-21) respond loudly. After Phil Double's RBI single tied the game at 1-all, Scarpitti drilled a three-run homer. The hosts increased their lead to 5-1 in the fourth when Jake Thomas smashed a solo home run.

Allegheny began chipping away at its deficit in the seventh. With one out, Hansen was hit by a pitch. He then moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Lynch. Lynch eventually crossed the plate on Stahl's RBI single, making the score 5-3.

In the eventful ninth, Stahl got the Gators started with a one-out single. Dassner provided a two-out double, setting up Fago's game-tying hit and, ultimately, Nichols's go-ahead knock.

Kyle Berns (2-0) pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win for Allegheny. He allowed one hit and recorded one strikeout and one walk. Frank Brank pitched a perfect ninth for his second save. Justin Abbott started on the mount for the Gators and worked four innings.

Brad Bates (3-3) suffered the loss in relief of Thiel starter Cody Northcott. Both allowed three runs on seven hits. Northcott had eight strikeouts and two walks.

Allegheny, which has won eight of its last nine games, now awaits word from the North Coast Athletic Conference on its tournament schedule. The NCAC Tournament begins Thursday.
