MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny baseball team celebrated Senior Day with a split against John Carroll at the Robertson Complex on Tuesday. In the opener, senior Matt Dishong fired a complete-game shutout, leading the Gators to a 4-0 victory, before the Blue and Gold fell in game two, 8-6.
Dishong allowed three hits during his gem, finishing with seven strikeouts and two walks. The Gators never trailed after taking a 1-0 lead on Chad Starzer's two-out, second-inning home run. The blast was hit over the left-center field fence.
The Gators added two runs in the third inning and one in the sixth. Andy Schleihauf, a senior, had a two-run inside-the-park homer. He drove a ball over the head of John Carroll center fielder John Skomra, plating himself and Jeff Dassner, who reached with an infield single. During the sixth, Dassner had an RBI single, driving in Eric Hansen, who doubled.
Dassner finished 2-for-2 while Zack Nichols went 2-for-3.
For the Blue Streaks, Tom Schaberl was the losing pitcher.
In the nightcap, John Carroll erupted for a five-run fifth inning, ultimately turning a 6-3 deficit into an 8-6 advantage. Tom Hickey had a two-run double, Aaron Miller chopped a two-run single and Ryan Pacyga hit an RBI single during the decisive frame.
Before their comeback, the Streaks loaded the bases against starting pitcher Matthew Niedzwiecki in the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded, senior James Fago entered the game and induced an inning-ending, double-play groundout. Fago eventually suffered the loss after running into trouble during the fifth.
The Gators built two different three-run leads, but could not hold on to either. They scored twice in the first on RBI singles by Dassner and Schleihauf and then once in the second on an RBI double by Hansen.
John Carroll struck back with a pair of RBI singles in the third by Hickey and Joe Veltri. Bryan Robinett added a sacrifice fly, helping the Blue Streaks even the game at 3-all.
An RBI single by Nichols and a two-run double by Fago guided Allegheny to a 6-3 lead before the JCU rally.
Niedzwiecki worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while recording one strikeout and two walks. In relief, senior Justin Abbott pitched one scoreless inning while Kyle Berns blanked the Blue Streaks for two innings.
Offensively, Hansen batted 3-for-4, including two doubles, and Matt Stahl (double) went 2-for-2.
Miller hit 3-for-3 while Hickey and Pacyga were 2-for-4. Reliever Robbie Bellusci pitched three scoreless innings for the win.
