MEADVILLE, Pa. – On Thursday, Allegheny College Director of Athletics Betsy Mitchell announced the hiring of Erin Detwiler to serve as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. Detwiler makes the trek to Meadville from Emory University, where she helped guide the Eagles to the 2010 NCAA Division III Women’s National Championship.
Detwiler was the assistant coach and aquatic coordinator at Emory, and played a key role in all facets of one of the nation’s premier swimming and diving programs. In addition to a wealth of experience formulating individualized practice plans, Detwiler is an outstanding educator with proven success providing stroke technique and analysis.
“It is with tremendous confidence that I welcome Erin to lead our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program,” noted Mitchell. “Her passion for the coaching profession was evident from our first conversation. Each ensuing conversation revealed a thoughtful, intelligent, caring educator, one who would take this opportunity seriously, work diligently on behalf of students and was clearly a student of the sport.”
A tremendously successful coach at the age group level, Detwiler established a competitive culture for the Waunakee Rural Aquatic Team (WRAT), while also serving as coach of the Wisconsin Zone-C team. Before taking over the reins of WRAT, Detwiler enjoyed a successful four-year stint at Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis. She was also an assistant coach for one season with UW-Milwaukee while in pursuit of a master’s degree in architecture.
“I look forward to watching the program continue its collective and individual success under Erin’s leadership and expect both teams to break back into the conference top three and return participants to the national championship level. Our students will benefit from her unusual combination of interests in architecture and athletics as she embodies both as a student and professional the breadth and balance that we strive to model for them.”
Detwiler was an outstanding competitor as an undergraduate, earning All-American honors while helping Kenyon College to four consecutive NCAA Division III National Championships from 1995-99.
