MEADVILLE, Pa. – For the first time in the tenure of Angelo Panzetta at the helm of the Gator’s men’s soccer program, the team has posted consecutive shutout wins in the first two games of the season. The Gators earned their second shutout in as many chances Friday against Eastern Mennonite University in the opening game of the Frostburg State University tournament.
The Gators jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first half. Sophomore Christopher Brennan, who tied for the team lead in goals last season (5) sent home the first goal of the afternoon in the 12th minute. Fellow classmate Ethan Green scored his first collegiate goal in the 37th minute.
The pace of the game and level of play stayed consistent throughout for the Gators. “Our defense played great, and our subs came in and we didn’t lose anything the entire game,” said Panzetta.
Senior defender Brian Terpin netted the final two goals of the afternoon on two free kicks in the second half. The two-goal performance from Terpin gives him the team lead in that category and all three of his goals this season have come on free kicks.
The defensive unit paced the club in the back allowing only two shots in the first half and seven for the game. Freshman goal keeper John Lichina secured his second consecutive shutout and has yet to be scored on in his collegiate career.
With the win, the Gators will play Saturday at 3:30 pm in the championship game against the winner of the Frostburg State/Wilmington game.
