MEADVILLE, Pa. – Senior captain D.J. Egan’s goal in the 25th proved to be the game-winner as the Gator defense made that goal hold up as they posted their third consecutive shutout over Wilmington College Saturday in the championship game of the Frostburg State Tournament.
“I was really pleased with the way we played today,” said head coach Angelo Panzetta. “We played a solid team in Wilmington and the team responded in their level of play. The quality of our possessions was key, we took care of the ball, and we were good in transition.”
The defensive back four along with freshman goalkeeper John Lichina continued the unprecedented start to a season under the guidance of Panzetta holding their opponent scoreless once more, giving the team three shutouts in the past three games. Panzetta credited the play of defense, “Our back four played solid, John (Lichina) did his job as the last line of defense, and together they were able to make our goal stand.”
The tournament crown is not the only hardware the Gators will bring back to Allegheny. Seniors D.J. Egan, Brian Terpin, and Seth Young were selected to the All-Tournament team. Young, a Pittsburgh, Pa. native is one of the most experienced Gator in the back four of the defense, starting in every game since his sophomore year and is the leader of the defense as one of the team captains. Egan, a senior from Gibsonia, Pa. hit the game-winner in the championship game, and Terpin cashed in two goals in 4-0 win over Eastern Mennonite in the tournament opener.
The Gators remain on the road for their next game as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on in-state rival Carnegie Mellon University Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
