WORCESTER, Mass. – Allegheny College netted a goal in each half and posted its second straight shutout with a 2-0 victory over Clark University at the Granger Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon. The battle against the NEWMAC-rival Cougars was the first of two New England stops for the Gators this weekend as Allegheny travels to Western New England College on Sunday.
Improving on their possession from Wednesday’s season-opener, the Gators outshot the Cougars, 9-3, and controlled the ball for a large portion of the contest. After junior Molly Waggoner hit the post with a shot from just outside the box in the 22nd minute, Allegheny finally broke through on a goal by Nicole Mascia five minutes later. It was the first strike of the year for the Gators leading scorer in 2009.
Clark had a chance for the equalizer late in the first half but freshman Jen O’Rourke had her chip from just inside the box turned back by Gator netminder Emily Carr.
Junior forward Georgia Frost put the contest away in the 56th minute when she found the back of the net with an unassisted tally.
Carr needed to make just two saves to record her 19th career shutout, while Joanna Clark made three saves in the loss for Clark.
