SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman forward Megan Halsch scored late in the first half and senior Abby Silvester added an insurance goal deep in the second as Allegheny College remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Western New England College in a non-league women’s soccer match on Sunday.
The Gators have yet to allow a goal this season in raising their record to 3-0. In the last two days, the Blue and Gold stepped out of region to take down two New England programs that boasted winning records last fall.
Halsh, who got a starting nod after a strong rookie start, put the Gators on the board with her first collegiate goal in the 39th minute. The score remained the same until Silvester netted her first goal of the season in the 87th minute.
The action was much more wide open than Allegheny’s first two contests as the game featured 24 shots and nine corners. The Gators totaled a season-high 14 shots and controlled the play for much of the second half. Silvester found space all morning, getting credit for a game-best five shots. Senior Julie Muller provided an offensive spark off the bench with two shots on target, while 2009 NCAC All-Conference selection Becky Arndt made her season debut.
Junior goalie Emily Karr compiled five saves for Allegheny en route to her third straight clean sheet and 20th career shutout. Freshman keeper Kayla Prout turned away seven shots, but was unable to prevent the Golden Bears from falling to 1-2 on the young season.
